Kentvanished community0.000000, -000.000000Was located on the Brazos River at Kimball's Bend, 1.5 miles below Kimball community, and near Lake Whitney in the northeastern corner of present Bosque County. The community began as a colony when the area of Bosque County was still part of Milam and McLennan counties. In 1850 English Universal Immigration Company, a British enterprise, bought 27,000 acres of land to establish a colony devoted to both agricultural and manufacturing endeavors. George Gatlin, the artist, may have been one of the promoters of the colony. Thirty English families, consisting of 125 people, arrived in the fall of 1850 and in January 1851. They founded a town called Kent. Five immigrating families soon abandoned the project and received individual headrights from the state. Although Sir Edward Belcher, special agent for the immigration company, attempted to attract more settlers, he failed. In 1852, Lieutenant Charles Finch Mackenzie, leader of the colony, and the other colonists abandoned the venture. Some colonists moved to Fort Graham, located across the river in Hill County, which was vacated by the army in November 1853. The town of Kent dissolved. In the 1970s only ruins of log houses were left at the site.
