Belle Plain | vanished community | 32.294190, -099.354200 | Official marker set up at the location by the State of Texas in 1936 reads: "Belle Plain - First official county seat of Callahan County, 1877-1883. The first unofficial county seat was Callahan City where the commisioners court was organized, July 30,1877, and several civil and probate cases filed. By an invalid election, October 13th, and a valid election, December 9th,1877, Belle Plain was selected. On January 16th, 1883, the county seat was located at Baird" Former bustling community prior to the coming of the railroad. It was also home to the Texas Military Institute. When the railroad bypassed Belle Plains in abt 1882 in favor of a route through Baird, it spelled death for this young community. All that remains now is limestone walls of the Texas Military Institute. It was also known as the Belle Plain College at some time. It's located approximately 5 miles south of Baird. It is a registered historical landmark with the State of Texas. | E.R.Hill pharo1829@aol.com |
