Thalia | pop place | 33.984722, -099.537500 | Thalia, Texas, a declining populated place, is located 11 miles east of Crowell, Texas, on Paradise Creek, U. S. Highway 70, and Farm Road 262 in east central Foard County. At the end of the nineteenth century when this farming and ranching community was still a part of Hardeman County, it was named Paradise for the nearby creek. When a post office was petitioned for the community, the postal service rejected Paradise as a name and suggested instead a Latin word that means "blooming or luxuriant." Thalia, the Latin word, referred to one of the nine muses - the one inspiring comedy and pastoral poetry. The post office at Thalia, Hardeman County, opened on 03 March 1890. In 1891 the area around Thalia was included in the territory that became Foard County. In 1911 Thalia reported one business, but from 1925 through 1927 it had no business to serve its population of 50. By 1929 production was begun in Thalia Oil Field, just north of the town, and population increased to its all-time record of 700. In 1930 a high school was built to improve the public school system. In 1931 seventeen businesses catered to a population of 500. Unfortunately, the oil boom was not long-lasting and the effects of the Great Depression seize the small town by the mid-1930s, when the number of businesses declined to 13 and population to 50. With the coming of World War II, population rose again to 200 and remained there through 1948, but the high school closed in 1943. Through the 1950s Thalia lost population and businesses, closing the decade with four businesses and 180 residents. Although the post office closed on 01 November 1957, the town had an accredited public school system and several Protestant churches in the 1950s. The decade of the 1960s ended with five businesses and 104 in population. During the 1970s Thalia witnessed a closing of businesses until only one remained, but population was still reported at 104. Although the population figure of 104 was continuously reported throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the last business closed by 1992. Thalia was the scene for Larry McMurty's 1966 novel, The Last Picture Show. Thalia Cemetery is located 1.5 miles north of town on Farm Road 262.
