2009 TXGenWeb Meeting

The annual TXGenWeb meeting for 2009 was held in Conroe, Montgomery County, TX on April 18, 2009.  Despite pouring rain for most of the weekend, the meeting was a great success. Thirty-two of the thirty-four registered participants braved the inclement weather.

The weekend began on Friday at the Montgomery County Library in the genealogy department.  Librarian Barbara Franz explained how user friendly the library was for research.  Lunch at “PIE IN THE SKY” was absolutely delicious.  The afternoon was devoted to research back at the library.  Friday night everyone met at Hyden's Restaurant on Lake Conroe for what turned out to be a very communal dinner.

Saturday was an especially educational day that included six guest speakers with a broad range of subjects.  TXGenWeb county coordinator Betty Dunquez spoke on the need for volunteers.  Author Emily Croom talked about “Roadblocks to my Research”.  Rita Telewicz elaborated about cascading style sheets and Phyllis Stemn’s topic considered “what makes a great website” from a users point of view.  Joy Fisher, with the USGenWeb archives, shared information about the archives and last but not least, TXGenWeb county coordinator Kimm Antell‘s topic was ADA compliance.  Lunch was catered by Jason’s Deli and dinner was at Alamo Joes in The Woodlands with excellent fajitas and a great atmosphere.

Both nights after dinner, hospitality was held in the breakfast area at the Baymont Inn.  It was here that Shirley Cullum found out she and Paula Perkins were cousins and successfully recruited another county coordinator in Barbara Franz.

I think I speak for all of us when I say, “We can't wait for 2010 in Waco!”
