2018 Annual TXGenWeb Meeting
Sylvia Smith hosted the 2018 meeting and hats off to her for putting together a great meeting.The Annual meeting was held in Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas, on March 24. The meeting was a success and full of great information. Several CCs arrived on Thursday afternoon so we had dinner as a group at the Cotton Patch Cafe. Friday was the official beginning of the activities and after lunch at Olive Garden, the plan was for the group to "Discover Historic Downtown Waxahachie". However, cooler weather and a light rain prevented us from really getting to discover the downtown area. Antique shops, thrift stores, and a scrapbook store were explored by several folks. Dinner was at Tia Molly's Mexican Restaurant and everyone enjoyed a great meal.
Twenty County Coordinators and a couple special friends attended the meeting on Saturday.
Joy Fisher, the USGenWeb Archives manager, started off the presentations by explaining the project and expressing a need for volunteers to serve as managers for counties within the project.
Betsy Mills discussed how to date old photographs and we all learned some valuable detection ideas on the subject.
Lela Evans presented a discussion on fur trading in early America. We have all heard references to "Lady Astor" but probably didn't know it referred to the wife of the wealthiest man in the fur trading industry.
The next presentation was on how to use CoreFTP as that had been a requested topic. After experiencing some technical issues, the main functions of CoreFTP and how to use them was explained. Some attendees had some insight that was greatly appreciated.
Our final speaker was Carla Clifton and the topic was Future Planning. The cost of a server was discussed as well as the need to provide our own hosting for the TXGenWeb Project. It was decided that these issues should be further researched with decisions to be made at the next meeting.
The Saturday evening meal was at Ryan's Buffet. The highlight of the evening was visiting with everyone. Great food and great companionship!
The 2019 Annual TXGenWeb Meeting will be held in Madisonville and will be hosted by Pat Stephenson. "We can't wait for 2019!"
