The Texas
Digital Newspaper Program: Walking through the Footsteps of Time
This will be
an overview of the Portal to Texas History, and specifically the newspapers
available on the Portal from The Texas Digital Newspaper Program. It will
highlight some of the materials available and provide tips and demonstrations
on how to search and work with newspapers in the Texas Digital Newspaper
Program.
Tim Gieringer has worked as the Metadata Coordinator for the Portal to Texas History’s Texas Digital Newspaper Program since 2014 and also contributes metadata work to the Oklahoma Digital Newspaper Program. He has a Bachelor's in Political Science from Marquette University and a Master's in Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to working for the Portal, he also enjoys utilizing it in his spare time for family and local history research.

Mic Barnette is a graduate of Texas State University, where he obtained
a degree in history, political science and education. He has been actively
engaged in genealogy since the age of 12 and has written numerous articles that
have appeared in many national, state and local magazines, newsletters and
quarterlies. From 1994 to 2004, he penned an award-winning historical/
genealogical column in Houston’s leading newspaper, the Houston Chronicle.
Since the 1980’s Mic has conducted professional genealogical research, taught
genealogical classes and lectured on genealogical topics while residing in New
Orleans, Louisiana, Atlanta, Georgia, and Houston and Dallas, Texas. Mic has been
a library associate with the Dallas Public Library since 2006 where he
currently works in the Genealogy Department

Nearly all your ancestors were eligible for military service. Finding records, pensions, citizen files,
enlistment, and draft registrations can easily be located. Veterans, widow and
heirs made claims creating a wealth of information. Migration patterns,
children, births, death and marriage records can be proved. Exciting facts and
discoveries are just waiting to be found!
Paula Perkins has been involved
in family history research for over 30 years, Paula is a proud 6th generation
Texan and a professional genealogical consultant, lecturer, and instructor of
genealogy classes. Currently TxSGS District I Representative, she is Immediate
Past President of the Navarro County Genealogical Society, a past president for
Collin County Genealogical Society, a TXGenWeb website creator and coordinator,
and an administrator for a number of DNA projects. Paula has served as a
volunteer in many capacities for genealogical societies, county historical
commissions, and her local genealogy library.

Lela
Evans became interested in her family history when she was in high
school. Having come from a family of storytellers, she started with
listening to all 4 of her grandparents telling stories about their childhood.
Since 1998 a County Coordinator
for the USGenWeb for a county in Mississippi, then added several counties in
Texas. She was on the state staff for many years as the Orphan County
Coordinator, Mentor Coordinator, and then as the Annual Meeting
Coordinator. She was the genealogy specialist at a public library
for 9 years and now is interim Lead Librarian at the El Centro Campus Library
for Dallas College.
Lela has been a speaker for the
genealogy preconference at the annual Texas Library Association Conference and
the Federation of Genealogical Societies National Conference, as well as
numerous local genealogy societies. She is a member of the Daughters of
the American Revolution, Lancaster Genealogical Society, and the Texas Library
Association.
