HOLMES, MCCASKILL posted by Martha Little on Saturday, March 1, 1997

Looking for this family who may have come to TX in late 1870s from PA. Elizabeth HOLMES (b@1840) was widowed in 1875 in Pittsburgh PA. She was the second wife of Norval HOLMES. Their surviving children were Nettie b@1858, Norval Jr b@1863, and Sarah b@1865. There is a James R MCCASKILL (1886-1906) buried in the HOLMES family plot in PA. His death certificate states that he was born in TX. His parents are listed as John MCCASKILL born Pittsburgh and Sadie HOLMES born Allegheny. This Sadie is most likely Sarah, dau of Elizabeth and Norval. It may be possible that Elizabeth remarried and moved to TX with the children. I can not locate any of them in the 1880 or 1900 PA census. Would like to know what became of Elizabeth and her children. Martha Little P O Box 90111 Raleigh, NC 27675-0111

I am researching the surnames of BANKHEAD and MCNEELEY. The 1860 census for Hill County lists William C. BANKHEAD (age 33 and born in Alabama) as living near Fort Graham. He was married to Elizabeth Jane (maiden name unknown). Elizabeth Jane was one-half Cherokee Indian. One of their children was George W. BANKHEAD who married Susan MCNEELEY in Meridian, Texas on November 18, 1875. In 1887, George and Susan left Texas and settled in the Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. Susan died around 1889 when my Grandmother, Edie Jane BANKHEAD was born. The Cherokee Nation Roll card for George W. BANKHEAD and his children lists Elizabeth Jane BANKHEAD (William's wife and George's mother) as being deceased. I am most interested in learning Elizabeth Jane's maiden name. Also, I have no information regarding George's wife, Susan MCNEELEY and would appreciate any information.

I am looking any information on Maria ADAMS who was living in captivity as a slave in 1846 somewhere in Texas. In 1842, Maria and her younger children were taken from Southern Illinois and eventually ended up in Texas. She was born in the early 1790s. She married Charles Adams about 1818, when the two were indentured servants for Illinois Territorial Gov. Ninian EDWARDS. Later in 1825, Edwards sold their contracts to Col. A. G. S.WIGHT of Gallatin County, Illinois. Edwards allowed the Adamses' two young children, Nelson and Ellen to go along. Wight sold their contracts to John CRENSHAW in 1829 or 1830. The Adames had another child, Nancy Jane Adams, who was born in October 1829. It is believed that up to eight children were taken to Texas along with Maria. I would appreciate any help anyone can give. Charles, Nelson and a mulatto named Nelson PERRY, but called Fox, may have traveled to Texas in 1847 to try to rescue the family. At the time, it was known where they were at. We just don't know where they were today.

One story says that Rhoda lived in Blanket, TX and then another says Rule TX. Then one relative believes that one of these people lived in Brownsville, TX but I think it's possible that he has this confused with Brownwood which is close to Blanket. But, maybe not too, who knows!! Also, somewhere into this puzzle fits Cal. (prob Calvin) and Lee Jeffreys/Jeffries. Lee (unknown maiden name) is supposed to be the daughter to one of my greatgrandmothers siblings but no one seems sure as to who she belonged. If any of this sounds familiar PLEASE contact me. ELKINS, MACARTHUR, WILKERSON posted by Colleen Ewan on Sunday, March 30, 1997

I am searching for information on the death of Mary Ida MACARTHUR. I believe she died in Dallas, Texas about 1962. She was in a nursing home at the time of death. I believe the name of the nursing home was Manning. Her maiden name was ELKINS and previous married name was WILKERSON. Would like any information or to correspond with anyone with information.
JOHNSON, SHEFFIELD posted by Craig Comes on Monday, March 31, 1997

Looking for more information on the marriage of Eugene Albertus "Burt" JOHNSON to Helen SHEFFIELD September 5, 1915 in Texas. Have no location information. Burt's father, Benjamin Franklin JOHNSON (ca. 1841 - July 5, 1920) drove from Alabama for the ceremony. Where was the wedding and who else attended? Who are the parents/siblings of Benjamin Franklin Johnson? I can also be reached at cyberlemon@juno.com and will share all have for any leads. Thanks
