Be the Home for a Texas County's Genealogy
County Coordinators are at the heart of TXGenWeb. They maintain free county-specific genealogy resources and help researchers find useful records and local information.
Your County Website
Your main responsibility is maintaining a website focused on genealogy and history for your Texas county.
- Keep county-specific genealogy as the site's primary focus.
- Meet the minimum requirements of TXGenWeb and USGenWeb.
- Identify the County Coordinator by real name and provide a way for visitors to make contact.
- Keep the site reasonably current, accessible, and backed up.
County Coordinators are responsible for arranging hosting for their county site. Hosting options may be available through TXGenWeb.
Stay in Touch
TXGenWeb conducts roll call three times each year: January, May, and September. Please respond to roll call and to important messages from the State Coordinator or Assistant State Coordinators.
County Coordinators are subscribed to the official TXGenWeb mailing list for important project announcements.
Help Researchers When You Can
Visitors may occasionally contact you with questions about your county. Be courteous and helpful when you reasonably can, and point researchers toward useful resources.
You are not expected to conduct extensive personal research for visitors or know every answer. It is perfectly acceptable to say that you don't know and suggest other places they might look.
Participate in TXGenWeb
County Coordinators may occasionally be asked to vote in TXGenWeb or USGenWeb matters or provide information needed by project leadership.
Build a Team
You Don't Have to Do It Alone
A County Coordinator can bring in other volunteers to make the work easier and the county site even better.
Co-Coordinators
A Co-Coordinator shares responsibility for the county with you. Both Coordinators should have access to the website and a backup, answer roll call, and follow TXGenWeb and USGenWeb requirements.
A Co-Coordinator must be approved by TXGenWeb leadership before receiving access to TXGenWeb server space.
Assistant Volunteers
Assistants can help with almost anything your county needs. They might maintain web pages, answer lookup requests, locate or transcribe records, manage social media, photograph cemeteries or historical sites, or help with special county projects.
Assistants do not necessarily need access to your website or server. Anyone receiving access to TXGenWeb server space must first be approved by TXGenWeb leadership.
When You Need Help
Please ask. TXGenWeb has experienced volunteers who can answer questions, troubleshoot problems, and help you learn. Finding a Co-Coordinator or assistant is encouraged if your county becomes more than you comfortably want to manage yourself.
